February 25-27, 2020 – IAMU Training & Office Complex
Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities is pleased to offer our Transformer School for Electric Lineworkers. This Transformer School will focus on single-phase and three-phase transformer connections and theory. This workshop will be a combination of classroom & hands-on training. Participants will be exposed to situations that are as “real-world” as possible, without the real-world risk or danger. The course will start with the basics of transformers, including turns ratios, polarities, calculations, connections, and troubleshooting. Additionally, participants will learn about three-phase systems with phasor diagrams and the relationship of the phasor to the transformer itself. In the hands-on portion of the course, participants will work with miniature transformers that are energized and will blow fuses, in order to experience what happens when something is wired incorrectly. The class will continue to build on the miniature transformer banks and work on troubleshooting. Additionally, they will discuss motor rotation as it relates to three-phase systems. This workshop is beneficial for anyone that is involved with the electric line crew including apprentices, journeyman lineworkers, and employees from other departments that may assist as a ground person. It is also applicable to those who desire to strengthen their basic transformer knowledge. *Apprentices will receive 16 OJT hours for attendance (OH & URD hours)* Course Schedule: Tuesday, February 25
Wednesday, February 26
Thursday, February 27

IAMU Director of Member Services Dave Hraha has been reappointed to serve on the Iowa Occupational Safety & Health Advisory Council (IOSHAC) by Labor Commissioner Rod Roberts. Hraha was also elected as the new Treasurer for the Council. Hraha has served the past two years on the IOSHAC, last year as Secretary of the Council.
IOSHAC has an extensive history of community involvement in Iowa. The Council has provided academic scholarships since 1977 to deserving students attending Iowa colleges. Supporting the “next generation” of health and safety professionals is one of the core missions of the Council. The Council also works to annually acknowledge those who have made significant contributions to the health and safety of Iowans. This annual safety award was renamed the Gary Hawk Award in 1996 in honor of Gary’s contributions to both the Council as well as to the safety of working Iowans. Finally, the volunteer members of the Council annually organize and hold the Iowa Governor’s Safety and Health Conference, where important health and safety education is provided to Iowans at an affordable price and convenient location. There have been recent reports of vandalism – in the form of graffiti and physical damage – at several wind turbine sites in south central Iowa (not IAMU member sites). The vandalism occurred in December. It is unknown if the incidents are connected; there is an ongoing investigation. The graffiti is a combination of statements, unusual symbols, and various drawings of male genitalia. If you have had any vandalism incidents recently, please contact Russell Saffell, IAMU Director of Member Security & Critical Infrastructure Protection. You can reach Russ at 515.289.1999 (office), 515.988.8686 (cell), or by email at rsaffell@iamu.org.
