April is National Safe Digging Month

3/26/2025

Each April, the industry recognizes National Safe Digging Month (NSDM), raising awareness about safe digging practices among the public and professionals nationwide. Throughout the month, campaigns and activities highlight the importance of contacting 811 before digging.

  • Purpose:
National Safe Digging Month, celebrated in April, aims to raise awareness about the importance of contacting 811 before any digging project, whether it's a small home project or a large commercial excavation.

  • Why it's important:
Calling 811 ensures that underground utilities like gas, electric, water, and sewer lines are marked, preventing potential damage and ensuring the safety of those involved in the digging project.

  • What to do:
    • Contact 811: Call 811 or use the online service a few business days before starting any digging project.
    • Wait for markings: Allow the utility companies time to mark the area where you plan to dig.
    • Respect the markings: Carefully dig around the marked lines and avoid damaging them.

Common Ground Alliance has a toolkit with resources on their website to use- graphics, social media postings and a press release template you can find here.

Natural Gas Utility Workers’ Day is Friday, March 18 - Ways to Show Your Appreciation

3/4/2025

Natural Gas Utility Workers Day started nine years ago in 2015. The designation is meant to recognize employees who provide one of their most valuable assets—their natural gas utility. The date of March 18 was chosen because it was the date of the New London, Texas school explosion in 1937 that led to the widespread odorization of natural gas and an increased emphasis on safety.

Ways in which you can acknowledge Natural Gas Utility Workers:
  • Share IAMU’s Facebook Graphic to announce the day, you can find that here: https://www.facebook.com/IAMUpage
  • Issue a company email or press release using information in the above paragraph or information found on the American Public Gas Association (APGA) website and provide more information
  • about the projects you have been involved with in your community: www.apga.org/events/naturalgasutilityworkersday. You can also find some great posting suggestions for your social media channels, along with graphics you can use.
  • Have a social media posts with their photo or names that March 18.
  • Thank your workers! Send the message out to employees showing appreciation for their hard work.

National Groundwater Awareness Week is March 9-15, 2025

3/3/2025

Life as we know it would be impossible without groundwater. It is the world’s most extracted natural resource, and it supports our ecosystems.

An annual observance established in 1999 to highlight the responsible development, management, and use of groundwater, the event is also a platform to encourage yearly water well testing and well maintenance, and the promotion of policies impacting groundwater quality and supply. Groundwater advocates across the country also use the week to highlight local water issues in their communities.

The National Groundwater Association (NGWA) has all you need to get the word out. Just go to https://www.ngwa.org/get-involved/gwaw to access free tools, resources, and facts and social media artwork to share with others. During National Groundwater Awareness Week, IAMU will be sharing information on the topic on Facebook and LinkedIn.  Feel free to share our posts.

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities is pleased to offer two scholarship programs this year – a scholarship program for students pursuing a post-secondary program with a utility focus and a general scholarship program for children or grandchildren of IAMU member employees.

“IAMU is pleased to have two scholarship offerings again for 2025,” said Troy DeJoode, IAMU executive director. “Last year, we awarded four scholarships to students pursuing educations in utility-related fields to help the next generation of professionals to get the education and training that they need. Again this year, we are offering another scholarship to the children and grandchildren of IAMU members. This is a general scholarship, and the recipients do not need to be pursuing a utility-related certification or degree.”

Utility-Focused Scholarship
Each $2,000 scholarship will be distributed to the educational institution. To apply, candidates must fill out and submit the Utility Focused Scholarship Application. Applications are due March 11, 2025 to [email protected]. A minimum of 4 scholarships will be awarded. IAMU will announce the award recipients by April 25, 2025.

To be eligible for consideration, candidates must:

  • Be attending a post high school education program located in Iowa in the fall of 2025.

Preference will be given to applicants entering a utility-related career with a special preference to applicants entering utility-related trades programs leading to careers in difficult to fill utility careers such as, as an example only, electric line worker, water treatment or distribution operator, or operator qualified natural gas positions.

General Scholarship
Each $500 will be distributed to the educational institution. To apply, candidates must fill out and submit the General Scholarship Application.  Applications are due March 11, 2025 to [email protected]. A minimum of 4 scholarships will be awarded.
