Sergeant Bluff city and utility crews found themselves working on Labor Day due to a fast moving storm that tore through the area on August 31, 2014. The National Weather Service reported winds in excess of 80 mph during the storm which caused damage to the utilities electric system.

After the storm passed, the utility was left with broken distribution poles, circuits left lying on the ground, and numerous customer services torn down by wind and tree damage. Due to the extent of damage to the system, utility officials were forced to use the IAMU mutual aid program. Region 2 coordinators Brandon Craighton from Ogden and Rory Weis from Denison spent the evening contacting utilities in the area for help. Some utilities in Region 1 were also involved in the event. Denison also had minor damage from the same storm system, but they did not require mutual aid.
Sergeant Bluff had utility crews responding to their call for help late Sunday and early Monday morning to begin cleanup and restoration. The utilities from Hawarden, Mapleton, Spencer, Manilla, and Woodbine responded with personnel and equipment to help restore power. Crews had power restored to all areas on Tuesday after another storm passed through the area and caused more damage on Monday night.
John Robinson of Sergeant Bluff Utilities was extremely pleased with the help from everyone.” Our utility had materials and many distributors in the area, but we needed trucks and people to help. This will take a few weeks to clean up, but at least the power is back on”. John also mentioned that there will be much to do in order to get the system back into shape. The utility is very grateful for all of the help, especially on a holiday weekend.
