Retiring Electric Safety & Training Committee Members

IAMU has a great group of people who volunteer on various IAMU committees. All of our committees play a vital role in planning and assisting during workshops.

The Electric Safety & Training Committee has three members who will be retiring this year. During their February meeting, certificates honoring them were presented. The certificates read: “This certificate of appreciation is hereby awarded in recognition of your generous participation and contribution to the IAMU Electric Safety & Training Committee, which will have an enduring and positive effect on the safety and health of municipal electric utility employees”.

Bold Scammers Foiled by Local Business

Would-be crooks took an old scam to a new level in Cedar Falls this month. The targeted business turned the fraudsters away empty handed, and Cedar Falls Police urge businesses and households to be alert for similar scams.

The scam works like this. A business or household gets a call, often on a Saturday, from someone who falsely claims to be from the local electric utility. The caller threatens to turn off the power unless the customer pays his overdue bill immediately, and pressures the customer to give up credit card or checking account information.

Earlier this month, two men trying to pull this scam first called then showed up in person at a local business.

Toolbox Talk - Alternate Entry Procedures for PRCS

Alternate entry procedures allow for employee entry into confined spaces so long as there are no safety (physical) hazards AND the atmospheric hazards can be controlled by continuous forced air ventilation. Under this type of entry, no permit, attendant or rescue provisions are required; however, a verification that the space is safe for entry and that pre-entry measures have been taken must be provided.

2016 Gas Pipeline Welder Qualification Workshops - Registration Still Available!

Registration is now open for the 2016 Gas Pipeline Welder Qualification Workshops.

Choose from two locations:

March 14-16, Des Moines Area Community College, Ankeny

March 14-17, Iowa Lakes Community College, Emmetsburg

Designed for beginning and advanced welding, these workshops are for gas distribution system welders who work for municipal utilities or welding contractors. Included will be the opportunity to perform one or more of the pipeline welding procedures in the IAMU procedures manual. Instructions on current welding techniques will be given throughout both sessions.

Gas "Boot Camp" is March 28-April 1

IAMU will be offering a Gas “Boot Camp” Operator Qualification Training Workshop at the end of March. The workshop will take place March 28 – April 1, 2016 at the IAMU Training & Office Complex.

This workshop is geared towards: New operators, dispatchers, on-call personnel, and operators who would like to qualify or re-qualify on the covered tasks being presented. Hands-on and written evaluations will be offered. Participants may attend one day or all week. This training is also very valuable for dispatch personnel answering phone calls.

Qualifications will be offered for all topics covered.
