The 24th Annual Water and Wastewater Operator’s Training Workshop will be held November 13 – 15, 2018, at Holiday Inn Northwest, Des Moines. To register, click here.

This yearly training is a must for any water and wastewater professionals wanting practical information to help them do their jobs. The three-day workshop includes basic and advanced topics on water treatment, water distribution, and wastewater. Attendees can earn up to 1.2 CEUs toward certification, plus get a chance to connect with other municipal water professionals from around the state as well as check out products and services from water-related vendors.

Site Selection magazine annually awards the Governor’s Cup recognition based on the number of new and expanded corporate facilities as tracked by the Conway Projects Database.
 
The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) is so proud to work with on some fantastic projects and expansions throughout Iowa, but IEDA knows that it only touch a fraction of our state’s projects. That’s why the IEDA asking for your assistance. 
 
The IEDA NEEDS YOUR HELP to build out the list of qualified projects in Iowa. We want to know about EVERY expansion and job created in Iowa that meet these guidelines.
 
Please send your community/region’s information, either in an existing format OR by using this excel template, by November 16 to matthew.kodis@iowaeda.com.  
 
The IEDA will compile the list of qualified projects and submit Iowa’s entry on behalf of the state. 
 
Together, we can bring the cup to Iowa! Thanks, in advance, for your participation.

Please note: The projects must be announced they are under construction or have completed construction after December 15, 2017 to be considered.

Transformer School - Save the Date!

December 18-20, 2018 at the IAMU Training & Office Complex.

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities is pleased to offer our Transformer School for line workers. The Transformer School will focus on transformer theory plus single-phase and three-phase transformer connections.

Participants will be challenged by the course instruction and hands-on station work that can benefit any utility! The various stations are designed to simulate "real world" scenarios without the real-world dangers. Working individually and in small groups, participants will benefit by understanding, building, examining, and collaborating to further develop troubleshooting methods that can help maintain your utility's reliability.

This course will be limited to the first 24 enrollments.  Further details will be released soon.

The 30-Hour course establishes a foundation for the utility / company safety program. It will help locate and apply OSHA safety & health standards, policies, and procedures; utilize OSHA standards & regulations to implement an on-going safety & health program; identify common violations of OSHA standards and propose abatement actions; describe appropriate abatement procedures for selected safety hazards and conduct internal training on OSHA regulations. Hands-on activities will be included.

Who should attend?
This advanced course is recommended for supervisors and managers. If you previously attended a 10-Hour course you may be particularly interested in attending because of the depth & application of the subject matter.

Registration Deadline for Governor's Safety Conference Extended to Friday, Oct. 26

If you haven’t registered for this year’s Iowa Governor’s Safety & Health Conference yet, the deadline has been extended to Friday, Oct. 26.

Check out the featuring sessions on many urgent safety topics, including the recently added session “When Disaster Strikes! The Vermeer Tornado and Lessons Learned.” In this presentation, Steve Flann, Vermeer’s senior director of environmental, health, safety and security, will discuss how robust planning protected the lives of Vermeer employees and allowed the company to get back up and running a short time after the July 19, 2018 tornado. This session will be provided on both Thursday, Nov. 1 and Friday, Nov. 2.

New Training Workshop Focuses on Bottom Line for Industrial Stormwater

Industrial and commercial facilities with “stormwater discharge associated with industrial activit” are required to obtain permits, typically known as General Permits #1 and #3. This includes many municipal utilities. A new training opportunity has been developed to help those facilities understand their permitting requirements, develop pollution prevention plans, and implement best management practices with the goal of staying in compliance.
 
The workshop, scheduled for Nov. 29, 2018, is presented by the Iowa Stormwater Education Partnership (ISWEP) (www.iowastormwater.org) and co-sponsored by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
 
Who should attend? 
Company and utility managers, site supervisors, environmental managers and staff, consultants, contractors, and others.  Presentations will feature experts on industrial stormwater permitting and compliance, including:
  • Mark Matthews, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: “Why are you here?  Basics of industrial stormwater permitting”
  • Joe Griffin, Iowa DNR: “What is the IDNR process and implementation expectations?”
  • Rebecca Svatos, Stanley Consultants: “How to implement stormwater pollution prevention plans”

What You Need to Know About Mobile Crane Operations

Most of us are now aware that the crane regulation in Construction was updated in 2010 and many needed changes were made from the original 1971 regulation, which was based on a 40-year-old standard. The new regulation is designed to prevent most common cause of fatalities; electrocution, struck-by hazards during assembly/disassembly, collapse and overturn. It also clarifies host employer responsibilities and the elements of crane operator certification.

Mobile cranes are defined as equipment that can hoist, lower and move horizontally a suspended load. There are certain pieces of equipment that are exempt from having to meet standard requirements as long as the equipment is used in the manner in which it was designed.
