Transformer School for Electric Line Workers – December 18th – 20th

11/28/2018

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities is pleased to offer our Transformer School for line workers. The Transformer School will focus on single-phase and three-phase transformer connections and theory.

Participants will be challenged by the course instruction and hands-on station work that can benefit any utility. The various stations are designed to simulate “real world” scenarios, without the real-world dangers. Working individually and in small groups, participants will benefit by understanding, building, examining, and collaborating to further develop troubleshooting methods that can help maintain your utility’s reliability. A certificate of achievement will be provided showing the hours of attendance acquired. Certificates will be emailed after the course.

The School will take place Tuesday, Dec. 18 through Thursday, Dec. 20 at the IAMU Training & Office Complex in Ankeny.

To register for the School, click here.

10 Strategies to Protect State and Local Property After the FCC’s Small Cell Preemption Order

11/16/2018

Set to become effective on January 14, 2019, the Federal Communications Commission’s new wireless preemption Order has states, localities, and publicly-owned utilities rightly alarmed about encroachment on local authority and about forced federal requirements that put at risk the primary purpose of many public assets. In short, the FCC has preempted state and local authority and mandated that wireless companies shall have low-cost, streamlined access to state- and locally-owned public property to mount small cell facilities. To learn more some strategies and tactics that you may want to consider to protect your assets and their critical missions, subject to the guidance of your legal counsel, click here.

Board of Directors Opening

11/15/2018

IAMU’s nominating committee is currently looking for interested parties to fill current and potential vacant positions on the IAMU board of directors starting immediately.

All director positions on the IAMU Board are “at large”, but we do consider a variety of criteria when evaluating potential candidates in an effort to maintain a balance of perspectives. In doing so we will consider many criteria including but not limited to: educational background, work experience, gender, race, utility location, type of utility represented, and size of community represented. Terms are three years. The preferred candidate would be willing to consider multiple terms, as well as executive committee assignments. The current vacancy is for a term that ends in February 2020. We anticipate additional openings in early 2019 as well.

While directors can leave at any time we are particularly interested in candidates that, after some time on the board, are willing to consider serving on the executive board, ultimately culminating in being president.

The board typically meets the second Thursday of the odd numbered months in Ankeny from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. There are eleven members of the board. While in person attendance is encouraged and preferred, some electronic attendance is permissible.

If interested please contact Executive Director Troy DeJoode by email at [email protected].
