Be Sure to Proof Your IAMU Directory Listing

1/29/2020

IAMU publishes a membership directory every other year. We will be publishing one in 2020. We should have a copy of the directory to each member in late spring.

We are beginning the directory updating process now. In the next week or so, a member’s primary contact will receive a proof of the member listing by email. IAMU asks that you review the proof and respond to the email with any needed changes to ensure your listing is up to date. We would like all updates returned by mid-February. If you don’t have any changes, please respond to the email so  we know that we don’t need to follow up with you. Thank you in advance for your help in updating the directory.

Municipal utilities have a significant economic impact on the communities they serve

Iowa’s municipal utilities collectively add more than $1 billion in total value to the state’s gross regional product every year, according to a just released economic impact study by the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU).

The study also showed that Iowa municipal utilities:
  • Serve an estimated 2,179,789 people. That’s 69% of Iowans.
  • Employ an estimated 3,274 people directly and support another 5,000 jobs indirectly. That’s one of Iowa’s largest employers.
  • Own almost $4 billion in total assets.
  • Generate almost $1.3 billion in annual revenues.

“The numbers confirm what IAMU has always known: Municipal utilities provide value, strengthen communities, and spur economic growth,” said Troy DeJoode, IAMU Executive Director. “There are significant benefits to having municipal utilities in communities, and we need to make sure everyone knows it.”

Krista Wenzel, President and CEO of KDW Advisors, assisted IAMU with gathering and analyzing the available data. This meant collecting IAMU members’ numbers from the Iowa Auditor of State’s website and the Iowa Utilities Board’s utility annual report filings. Wenzel then used the IMPLAN regional model for the state of Iowa to generate an economic impact study.

“The mission of municipal utilities is to do what’s in the public interest,” said Tim Whipple, IAMU General Counsel. “Municipal utilities can focus on providing the best and lowest costs service to customers because they’re responsive to the community and not to shareholders and quarterly profit demands. This value allows communities to achieve other long-term objectives such as quality of life, economic growth, and affordability. We’ve known these benefits for a long time, and we regularly talk about the value of a municipal utility. But we don’t talk enough about the economic impact of a municipal utility. Collectively, municipal utilities are one of the engines driving the state’s economy forward, creating well-paying jobs, and building the foundation of economic growth in other sectors of the economy.”

Don’t Forget to Register for the IAMU Annual Meeting

1/29/2020

The Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities will hold its Annual Member Meeting at 11 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 6 at the IAMU Office, 1735 NE 70th Ave., Ankeny, Iowa. All members must be registered in advance to attend – either in person or electronically.

Per the IAMU By Laws, each member utility gets one vote per utility type membership. For example, a member with electric and water utility memberships gets two votes. A member with an electric, natural gas, water, and broadband gets four votes.

Again, all members must be registered in advance to attend. Although as many member representatives may attend the meeting as you wish, each member will need to designate a voting delegate in advance as set forth below. Each voting delegate must be employed by the member. Members may not vote by proxy.

MEMBERS ATTENDING IN PERSON
For those attending in person, advanced registration is greatly appreciated, although members may register in person at the meeting UNTIL 10:30 a.m. February 6, 2020. No registrations for in-person attendance will be accepted after this time.

MEMBERS PARTICIPATING ELECTRONICALLY
This year, members will also be able to attend the meeting electronically via webinar. Those members wishing to attend electronically must register online, 48 hours in advance, before 11 a.m., February 4, 2020. Member voting delegates must be designated at the time of registration.

For those members that register for electronic attendance, log-in information will be provided 24 hours in advance of the meeting, by 11 a.m. February 5, 2020. To ensure an accurate count for voting, no telephone call-in will be available, and webinar log-in may be unique to each voting delegate.

The agenda, and any supporting materials will be sent out to registered members 24 hours in advance (by 11 a.m., February 5, 2020).

If you have questions, please feel to contact IAMU Executive Director Troy DeJoode at 515-289-1999 or tdejoode@iamu.org.

IAMU publishes a membership directory every other year. We will be publishing one in 2020. We should have a copy of the directory to each member in late spring.

We are beginning the directory updating process now. Around the beginning of February, a member’s primary contact will receive a proof of the member listing by email. IAMU asks that you review the proof and respond to the email with any changes that are needed to ensure your listing is up to date. We would like all updates returned by mid-February. If you don’t have any changes, please respond to the email so  we know that we don’t need to follow up with you. Thank you in advance for your help in updating the directory.
