An important-and costly-topic was discussed at the IAMU Fall Broadband meeting on September 23rd...the upcoming round of negotiations between cable companies and TV stations over the right to carry their signals/

Before a cable company can carry a TV station's signal on their system, they have to have a signed agreement called retransmission consent.  Every three years, TV stations and cable companies have to re-negotiate these deals, and for the past several rounds of retransmission negotiations the prices charged by TV stations have continued to rise.

Representatives of most of Iowa's municipal cable TV companies learned more about the process from two national experts at the Fall Broadband Meeting on September 23rd at IAMU.  Chris Cinnamon (above, left), principal at the telecommunications law firm Cinnamon Mueller, provided IAMU members with a brief history of retransmission consent, and told the group that rates charged by TV stations are expected to rise by 50% or more during the period beginning January 1, 2015.

Ross Lieberman (above, right) is the Senior Vice President of Government Affairs for the American Cable Association (ACA).  He informed members of the ACA's efforts in Washington, D.C. to change the retransmission consent rules to give small cable companies more flexibility in the negotiations so that they can try to control the fees paid to TV stations.

The meeting also featured a discussion of fiber transport networks and provided networking opportunities for both technical and customer service staff.

The next major IAMU broadband event will be the 2015 Broadband Conference on March 18 and 19, 2015 at the Ramada Tropics Resort and Conference Center in Des Moines.
