From Chad Fields, Geologist 3, IDNR’s Water Supply Engineering Section It’s that time of year again…snow is on the ground, frost is on the windows, lights are on the trees, and Iowa DNR Water Use Annual Report Forms are in the mail. To help with the State’s new emphasis on proper water level measurements, the Water Use Program recently produced a short guide to assist Water Use permittees acquire the proper equipment and knowledge for taking water levels in a well, and correctly submitting those values to the program. The four page guide includes information on different types of equipment, details the statewide datum for water level measurements (feet below ground surface), and where to properly submit readings once they are taken. Also included in the guide are simple equations that illustrate the math behind static and pumping water levels as well as how to convert from pressure reading to feet of water. The guide is available to download on the program’s website, under the Technical Information Section at www.iowadnr.gov/wateruse.
