New Chairs and members have been appointed for the 2015 session. In general, leadership of the Commerce Committees is fairly urban and Des Moines-centric.

Many utility-related bills of interest to IAMU members are assigned to the House and Senate Commerce Committees. New Chairs and members have been appointed for the 2015 session. In general, leadership of the Commerce Committees is fairly urban and Des Moines-centric. The Senate Commerce Committee will have a new leader, Senator Janet Petersen (D) was appointed Chairperson. Senator Petersen’s name may sound familiar to some of you because she was House Commerce Chair during part of her tenure in the House of Representatives. Senator Petersen represents Senate District 18 – which is exclusively Des Moines. Vice-Chair and former Chair is Senator Matt McCoy (D), Senate District 21 – which includes parts of Des Moines and West Des Moines. Senator Bill Anderson (R), Senate District 3 – which includes parts of Plymouth and Woodbury Counties will return as Ranking Member. The House Commerce Committee Chair is Representative Peter Cownie (R) House District 42 - serving mostly West Des Moines. Representative Cownie will be starting his 4th term in the House and has been House Commerce Chair for the 2013-2014 sessions. The Vice-Chair of Commerce is a newly elected Representative Gary Carlson, House District 91 which includes the city of Muscatine. Ranking member is Representative Jo Oldson (D) House District 41 which includes parts of Des Moines and rural Polk County.
