Waverly Light and Power (WLP) has issued a Request for Proposals to design and build a fiber-to-the-premise (FTTP) broadband network in Waverly.
Voters in Waverly approved a referendum to establish a municipal communications utility in 2000, with 86% of voters approving of the concept. Although WLP did install a fiber ring to connect the electric system’s substations and provide SCADA communications, a full build-out of the system was not pursued. Last year, WLP hired Magellan Advisors to examine the feasibility of building out the network to serve all Waverly homes and businesses with broadband. That study showed that a FTTP network owned by the electric utility and leased to the communications utility was feasible and would allow citizens of Waverly to access next-generation broadband services.
Companies that interested in submitting a response to the Waverly Light and Power RFP are required to attend a Pre-Bid meeting on December 9, 2014. Proposals are due January 8, 2015 and WLP plans select finalists to interview before making any decision on moving forward with the project.
